The recovery of impaired loans and the management of probable defaults are, in their essence, arts. As such, they guard the secrets of the "guild" and presuppose the orality of the exchange of knowledge; hence the opportunity to meet again in Verona to allow the "workshops" and their "artists" to confront each other. New rules (a new crisis code and a new reform of the civil process) demand that established practices be put to the test, and all this in the continuation of a difficult economic situation, which makes the art of recovery and management increasingly arts and more and more subject to hazards. Added to this are concerns about a possible financial crisis.
The credit management industry has already tried in the past to transform itself from an "art" to a "technique" and from a craft to an industrial practice. The Italian NPE market is, in this sense, one of the most evolved and mature, but on these meeting occasions we will have to try to understand together whether recent developments, e.g. in Artificial Intelligence, will be able to constitute game changers and whether they can, therefore, evolve the industry into a real science. As Thomas Kuhn observed, every revolution subverts a paradigm, a “status artis”. Should we, as some argue, really be near the event horizon today, meeting moments such as these are all the more important because they provide an opportunity to take note of what is there, but more importantly because they satisfy the need to predict what will be there. The big picture, as the word goes, is only there when we are "together," and it emerges by uniting everyone's brushstrokes in order to return a coherent picture that can guide our gaze as "industry artisans."
